The UK government is certainly interested in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions while also preparing the UK economy to benefit from the economic possibilities that the energy revolution will offer.
The government intends to implement policies that will position the UK at the vanguard of a global automotive revolution, resulting in cleaner air, a healthier environment, and a robust economy.
The UK government has unveiled a fresh set of climate proposals as part of its ‘Road to Zero’ plan which aims to accelerate the phase-out of high-polluting diesel and gasoline cars and encourage the adoption of ultra-low emission alternatives.
Here is everything you need to know about the 2030 Road to Zero initiative before attending the 2022 Electric Vehicle Event by GlobalBSG.
What is the UK’s Pathway to 2030 Road to Zero?
The UK government’s 2030 Road to Zero pathway is a long-term strategy outlined by the government to transition to zero-emission road transport by the year 2030 while cutting emissions along the way. The government announced its Road to Zero policy in July 2018.
The government has indicated that it will employ a combination of targeted grants and subsidies, fiscal incentives, and zero-emission car quotas to encourage the adoption of the cleanest automobiles.
While the government’s Road to Zero initiative is mostly high-level and long-term in nature, it does include several initiatives that are more immediately relevant to companies.
The Long-Term Ambitions of Road to Zero
The government has established the goal to place the UK at the forefront of zero-emission vehicle design and manufacture, with all new cars and vans being zero-emission by 2030. By 2040, it will have phased out the sale of new conventional gasoline and diesel automobiles and vans.
Essentially, by 2030, it aims for at least 50% of new car sales and up to 40% of new van sales to be extremely low emission vehicles.
The government anticipates that this transformation will be led by industries and consumers, with the actions outlined in this strategy assisting them in the coming years. In a constantly changing international situation, it will work to retain the UK’s leadership position and achieve all the goals. In 2025 it will assess what measures are needed if progress is not made quickly enough.
How Will It Be Carried Out?
1. Reduce Emissions from the Vehicles in Use
The government will be increasing the availability and long-term viability of low-carbon fuels in the UK to more than quadruple their use by 2032, to 7% of road transport fuel. It will also be taking legal action against garages that offer to remove emission-reducing devices from the vehicles.
2. Reduce Emissions from Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV)
The UK will be introducing a new industry-supported voluntary goal to cut HGV greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by the year 2025, compared to the 2015 levels.
The government will also launch a collaborative research project with Highways England to find and evaluate zero-emission technology for HGV traffic on the UK road network, as well as work with the trucking industry to establish an ultra-low emission standard.
3. Encourage the Use of the Cleanest New Vehicles
The government will be taking an approach to car emissions control that is as ambitious as its previous arrangements with the EU, as well as considering Vehicle Excise Duty reform to encourage van drivers to make the cleanest choices possible when acquiring a new vehicle.
It will also be forming a new road transport emissions advisory committee, which will bring together the government, the industry, and consumer organisations to guarantee clear and consistent consumer messaging and guidance on fuel and technology options.
The Next Big Electric Vehicles Summit of 2022
GlobalBSG is hosting a two-day hybrid conference that will cover the necessary technologies and solutions for smart charging. Some of the key topics of discussion in this event will be UK’s Road to Zero initiative, as well as investment needs and business models for e-mobility, current e-mobility, charging trends, and an update on the charging infrastructure market.
By attending this electric vehicle event either virtually or in person, you will be able to network with industry leaders while also sharing and learning from their knowledge and expertise.
