Why has the transition to electric vehicles been so slow?

March 10, 2022

The concept of electric vehicles can be dated back to the mid-1960s when it was met with the limitation of lack of technology. However, it has been more than 60 years, and electric vehicles are yet to find a steady demand from the standard population.

For the past few years, many Renewable Energy Conferences have focused primarily on pushing the idea and development of electric vehicles to make them more “in trend”.

Annual Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles Summit

Time and time again, at this renewable energy conference, the potential of electric vehicles was established. Its possibility of reducing the overall consumption of oil and greenhouse gas discharges has been recognized and accepted by world economies, and yet the transition to electric vehicles has been slow.

The number of electric vehicles over 10 million may sound encouraging, but with the world population well over 7 billion, 10 million is just a tiny fraction. Summits and conferences have been held to understand and counter the reasons that have led to underdeveloped growth in electric vehicles demand.

Previous editions of the Annual Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles Summit had identified certain factors that had led to this slow market for electric vehicles. The reasons for this renewable energy conference have been detailed as follows:

Lack of Charging Stations

Governments around the world have been making battery chargers accessible as part of their resolution for a sustainable environment. However, the number is still very low – or that is the perception amongst the general public.

The perception can only be changed by the mass installation of charging points on a global scale. To put in perspective, the number of charging points in one of the biggest economies of the world – the USA, is just 17,000.

Higher Cost

Though electric vehicles have proven to be cost-effective in the long run, the higher initial cost compared to petrol or diesel vehicles has had an adverse effect on their demand. The experts are constantly trying to come up with innovations and product development to keep the servicing cost or maintenance price to the bare minimum to encourage the general public.

Government subsidies and falling lithium battery costs should have a positive effect, as conveyed by experts who are constantly pushing electric vehicles as a more sustainable transportation option.

Not Enough Microchips

One of the biggest reasons why the electric vehicle market has not picked up is because of its development itself. The shortage of chips has held back deliveries in the automobile market, and since electric vehicles depend on it, the impact was inevitable.

If countered, the shortage projected through till early 2023 can see a surge in demand for electric vehicles, more so in light of increased fuel prices in other vehicle segments.

Safety

The battery of any electronic device has always been the main concern for the public. With electric vehicles, it is more so given the rigorous usage that a vehicle is subjected to regularly. And, of course, the negative publicity of odd cases where battery fires have been reported has impacted the safety concerns around electric vehicles.

Though stand-alone cases were widely exaggerated, studies show that there is no distinguishing evidence to prove that electric vehicles are more prone to battery fires.

Integration of Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy Conference has long advocated distributed battery storage systems to widely solve the issue of not having enough charging infrastructure. It is based on the concept that it does not compromise energy reliability at the charging station while integrating renewable energy.

The 2nd Annual Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles Summit, which is scheduled to be held from June 09th-10th 2022, in Berlin as well as virtually, aims at bringing together scientists, educators, and innovators to present the latest innovations and solution-driven strategies. These will potentially counter many of the reasons that have been holding back the transition of electric vehicles into the public space.

The best way to get an in-depth understanding of the journey of EVs and the rising need for more charging stations in 2022, is to attend this renewable energy conference online or in person. Register today!

There are many more conferences and summits lined up in various fields this year, you can check them out here.
